Special Projects

The PEI Office of the Regional Chief is funded yearly to support work related to preserving our environment and advocating for its protection.  These special projects reflect the deep and enduring relationship First Nations have with the land.

Nature

Protecting Lands, Ecosystems, and Biodiversity

The lands, ecosystems and biodiversity that serve as the foundations of our natural world are integral to First Nations, shaping our past, defining our present, and determining our future. Through annual funding, our Office supports restoration, protection, and stewardship projects that are guided by Indigenous knowledge.

This Work Focuses On:

  • Protecting and restoring ecosystems
  • Supporting biodiversity conservation
  • Advancing Indigenous knowledge and stewardship
  • Ensuring First Nations perspectives are included in national and regional nature-based policies

Nature-related advocacy emphasizes that land protection and biodiversity conservation must be Indigenous-led, grounded in rights, and respectful of traditional knowledge and responsibilities.

Climate

Responding to Climate Change Through Indigenous Leadership

Climate change continues to impact First Nations communities, particularly coastal and rural areas such as those in Prince Edward Island. Through annual funding, our office supports climate-related advocacy and coordination at the national and regional levels.

This Work Focuses On:

  • Climate adaptation and resilience
  • Impacts of climate change on communities and infrastructure
  • Indigenous-led climate solutions
  • Participation in national climate strategies and policy development

This work ensures that First Nations voices are included in climate decision-making and that responses reflect community realities, cultural knowledge, and long-term sustainability.

Water

Protecting Water as a Sacred and Essential Resource

Water is central to First Nations life, culture, and well-being. Through annual funding, our office supports work related to water protection, access, and governance.

This Work Focuses On:

  • Advocacy for clean and safe drinking water
  • Protection of watersheds, rivers, and coastal waters
  • Inclusion of Indigenous rights and knowledge in water policy
  • Engagement on national water legislation and frameworks

The Regional Chief works to ensure water-related decisions recognize water as a sacred responsibility, not just a resource, and that First Nations are involved in shaping how water is protected and managed.
