The PEI ORC is committed to advocating for policies and initiatives that reflect the needs of PEI’s First Nations and Indigenous communities across Canada. 



Our work addresses numerous pressing issues, including treaty rights, climate change, economic development, land protection, MMIWG, and other key areas.

Portfolios

Our Regional Chief holds and co-leads several important national portfolios through the Assembly of First Nations, including MMIWG2S+, MMIMB, Health, and Jordan’s Principle.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People (MMIWG2S+)

The MMIWG2S+ portfolio focuses on advancing the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry and addressing the ongoing violence faced by Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

This Portfolio Focuses On:

  • Supporting families and survivors
  • Advocating for prevention, protection, and accountability
  • Ensuring Indigenous-led, trauma-informed, and culturally safe approaches
  • Engaging governments on systemic gaps in justice, health, and safety
  • Aligning national strategies, including anti-human trafficking efforts, with the Calls for Justice

The PEI Regional Chief is dedicated to ensuring this work is community-directed and reflects the realities of Indigenous women and 2S+ people, particularly in smaller and rural communities.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Men and Boys (MMIMB)

The MMIMB portfolio addresses the often under-recognized realities facing Indigenous men and boys, including violence, loss, involvement with the justice system, and gaps in social and health supports.

This Portfolio Focuses On:

  • Raising awareness and visibility of MMIMB
  • Addressing root causes such as colonialism, intergenerational trauma, and systemic barriers
  • Supporting community-led solutions and healing
  • Ensuring Indigenous men and boys are included

The PEI Regional Chief advocates for balanced approaches that recognize the interconnected experiences of Indigenous women, men, boys, and 2S+ people.

Jordan’s Principle

Co-Led with Regional Chief Francis Verreault-Paul (Quebec/Labrador)

Jordan’s Principle ensures that First Nations children receive the services they need, when they need them, without delay or denial due to jurisdictional disputes.

This Work Includes:

  • Implementation and accountability of Jordan’s Principle
  • Addressing systemic barriers and service gaps
  • Ensuring equitable access to health, education, and social services
  • Advocating for long-term, sustainable solutions beyond case-by-case approvals

The PEI Regional Chief works collaboratively to ensure Jordan’s Principle remains child-first, needs-based, and responsive to community realities.

Health

Co-Led with Regional Chief Mathʼieya Alatini (Yukon)

The Health portfolio addresses First Nations health priorities at the national level, with a focus on equity, access, and cultural safety.

This Work Includes:

Mental Health and Wellness

  • Trauma-informed and culturally grounded supports
  • Suicide prevention and crisis response
  • Community-based healing initiatives

Sports and Recreation

  • Youth engagement and wellness
  • Access to recreation and physical activity
  • Supporting healthy lifestyles and community connection

  • Improving access to essential health benefits
  • Addressing administrative and systemic barriers
  • Advocating for client-centred service delivery

The PEI Regional Chief works to ensure First Nations health priorities are addressed holistically and in ways that respect Indigenous knowledge and practices.
