Making Sure Mi’kmaq Voices are at the Table and Heard

Alongside our community partners and the AFN, we are working to ensure Mi’kmaq voices are present and respected in decision-making at all levels of government. When our leaders and community members are included in these spaces, the policies, programs, and initiatives that affect us are more likely to reflect our realities, values, and priorities.

True representation means more than being invited to the conversation—it means having the power to shape outcomes that support Mi’kmaq rights, well-being, and self-determination.

Having a seat at the table is not just about inclusion—it’s about recognition of Mi’kmaq governance and having a voice that is respected and acted on in the spaces where important decisions are made.

The Challenges

Mi’kmaq communities have faced many barriers to full and fair participation in decision-making, including:

  • A long history of being excluded from important policy discussions and negotiations.
  • Limited resources and capacity to fully engage in complex governmental and regulatory processes.
  • A lack of recognition and respect for Mi’kmaq governance systems and leadership.

What We're Doing

We are taking action to strengthen Mi’kmaq inclusion in government and policy development by:

  • Advocating for meaningful Mi’kmaq participation in decision-making forums, both provincially and nationally
  • Supporting leadership development and building the capacity of our communities to engage in complex policy discussions.
  • Working with all levels of government to formalize and uphold Indigenous representation in decision-making processes.

Milestones

Our advocacy efforts have helped ensure Mi’kmaq voices are represented at the Canada-PEI Energy and Resource Table. By strengthening Mi’kmaq representation at both the provincial and national levels, we are helping ensure that the voices of our communities are not only heard but respected.
