Clean Energy and Net Zero Projects

Our office is actively championing local clean energy projects that will benefit our First Nations communities in Epektwik. These projects, which include wind and solar installations, will help reduce emissions, lessen our dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels, and ultimately move us toward a net-zero future.

Importantly, the clean energy transition is aligned with our Mi’kmaw identity as interconnected with the natural world by harnessing the power of the wind, sun and other renewable energy sources while also protecting our sacred environment

These large infrastructure projects also create local jobs, support economic growth, and help build energy independence so we can move away from dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

The Challenges

Our First Nations communities on Epekwitk and across Canada have faced various barriers when it comes to pursuing clean energy projects, including:

  • Not having enough funding available.
  • Difficulty finding qualified people to run and manage these specialized projects.
  • Being left out of provincial energy planning.

What We're Doing

To move clean energy projects forward, we are:

  • Supporting projects in our communities, including Lennox Island.
  • Pushing for Indigenous voices in PEI’s energy transition planning..
  • Helping connect communities with funding and expert advice.

Milestones

The Wejipek Wind Project and the Nakuset Solar Farm, led by Lennox Island First Nation, are exciting examples of what’s possible when our Indigenous communities take the lead in clean energy projects.
