A Climate Plan Made by and for PEI First Nations

We are working diligently to support the development of national and provincial climate strategies that reflect Mi’kmaq values, knowledge and the unique needs of First Nations on Prince Edward Island.

Climate change affects everything that we are interconnected with and cherish – from the land and waters to the well-being, traditions, and livelihoods of our people. It is an existential threat to our natural world, our way of life and our communities. It demands a response that includes Indigenous voices, perspectives and leadership.

A strong climate strategy that’s designed by and for our Mi’kmaw communities will help protect traditional lands and ways of life, promote sustainable practices, and help ensure our communities are better prepared for the impacts of climate change. 

The Challenges

Our communities have faced several barriers when it comes to climate planning, including:

  • Being left out of larger climate policy discussions.
  • Not having enough funding or support to create our own strategies.
  • The challenges with integrating traditional Mi’kmaq knowledge and scientific approaches

What We're Doing

Alongside our partners in Epekwitk and across the nation, we are:

  • Involving Elders, youth, and community members in the development of a strong, unified climate plan.
  • Collaborating with climate experts to ensure provincial climate goals and strategies reflect Indigenous perspectives.
  • Advocating for funding and support for Indigenous-led climate actions.

 

Milestones

The AFN’s National Climate Strategy is already helping guide work in PEI by providing a national framework that supports local, Indigenous-led climate solutions.
